As US EV sales growth slows, Ford Motor Co. says it will delay rolling out new electric pickup trucks and a new large electric SUV as it adds gas-electric hybrids to its model lineup. The Dearborn, Michigan, company said Thursday that a much ballyhooed new electric pickup to be built at a new factory in Tennessee will be delayed until 2026.
The No. 2 U.S. automaker said the delay "will allow for the consumer market for three-row EVs to further develop and enable Ford to take advantage of emerging battery technology." Separately, Ford said it will delay deliveries of an all-new EV truck it will build at a new plant in western Tennessee until 2026. Ford said last year it planned to begin production in late 2025 and build up to 500,000 electric trucks annually.
The Port of Baltimore is the busiest U.S. port for car shipments, handling at least 750,000 vehicles in 2023, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration. Motor vehicles and parts accounted for 42% of all Baltimore port imports.
"All in all, a really, really good start to the year and we feel good about where we're trending," Jacobson said. GM had assumed a 2-2.5% price reduction but this year GM has not seen any drop in prices. "Demand is actually hanging in pretty strong," Jacobson said.
Under the agreement announced by the state and the company, Stellantis will comply with California's zero-emissions, light-duty vehicle sales requirements through 2030 even if the state cannot enforce its rules.
On Friday, the National Transportation Safety Board opened a separate investigation into the Feb. 24 crash, saying initial information indicated the Ford struck the rear of a Honda CR-V that was stationary in a traffic lane on Interstate Highway 10.
Ford CEO Jim Farley has urged investors to think of Ford Pro's bundle of software and vehicle sales, not Tesla, as the "future of the automotive industry."
Tesla has more than 26,000 plugs and nearly 2,400 Supercharger stations across the U.S. and Canada. Ford said its owners will have access to about 15,000 Tesla fast-charging plugs that are located strategically along travel corridors. Ford owners won't be able to use some older Tesla plugs.
Recent filings indicate that the company has patented the design for its upcoming Endeavour SUV, which will carry the 'Everest' moniker.
Ford also said that this week it began shipping the first newly designed gas-powered 2024 model F-150 pickups to dealers. Ford said it expects "to ramp up shipments in the coming weeks as we complete thorough launch quality checks to ensure these new F-150s meet our high standards."
The union said last week its members at the plant, which has 9,251 employees and builds Ford's most profitable F-series trucks among other vehicles, would go on strike this week if local contract issues were not resolved.
